Thank you!
I've just moved down to Tokyo from Nagano and I'm really excited to start exploring. Is it really true that Golden Week leaves Tokyo nearly empty? Somehow, I can't believe it...

Timely post! I'm arriving in Shinjuku early morning on the 2nd, and thought I'd have nothing to do until lunch time. Now I'm going to hit the flea market!

Skye, I have a confession to make: I don't think I've ever spent a full Golden Week in Tokyo! We usually go to Osaka. From the few times I've been in Tokyo during the holidays, I can say that business districts are nearly empty but shopping and entertainment areas can be quite crowded.

Rona, I'm glad you have something to do now! The flea market starts at 9:00, and if you're looking for something to do before then check out another timely article: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fv20090426kn.html It's a look at the neighborhood next to the park, and if the construction wear store interests you then there's more good news: it's open from 7:00am.

I think that I will be going to FujiQ highlands during Golden Week. I actually went to Toshimaen 2 weeks ago!

If you're looking for hiking ideas, Wes Lang's Hiking in Japan blog (http://japanhike.wordpress.com/) is by far one of the most comprehensive guides out there. If you don't like snow, then it's still a little early in the season to be hitting the hills, but there are plenty of lower-altitude alternatives. Mitsutoge near Mt Fuji, and Mt Myogi in Gunma are two easy day-trips in addition to Takao-san.

I went to the park for the flea market, but as is typical of me, I went to the wrong park! (Who knew there were two parks in Shinjuku?)

Oh well, I probably would have bought too much stuff, anyway!

Hope your Golden Week holidays were wonderful, even with the traffic on the way back to Tokyo.
